چکیده

[1] Atmospheric CO2 mixing ratios and carbon and oxygen isotope composition were measured at 18 m above the ground in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States, for a one-year period. Mixing ratios were highest in the wintertime with maximum values approaching 600 mmolmol 1 during atmospheric inversions. Nighttime carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of source CO2 showed a seasonal pattern with isotopically depleted values in the wintertime and isotopically enriched values in the spring and summer. The effects of gasoline combustion, natural gas combustion, and biogenic respiration of plants and soils on CO2 mixing ratio were quantified with a mass balance calculation using dual carbon and oxygen isotopic tracers. The calculations showed large contributions of natural gas combustion in the winter and significant nighttime biogenic respiration in the spring and late summer/early fall. The isotope-tracer technique used shows promise for quantifying the impacts of urban processes on the isotopic composition of the atmosphere and partitioning urban CO2 sources into their component parts.

Seasonal cycle of COO, COO, and COO in the middle atmosphere: Implications for mesospheric dynamics and biogeochemical sources and sinks of CO2

[1] The isotopic anomaly of oxygen in atmospheric CO2 is caused by exchange reactions with isotopically anomalous O(D) in the middle atmosphere. In the stratosphere, the major source of O(D) is O3 photolysis; O3 is known to possess mass-independent isotopic composition, with dO3 dO3 100% relative to atmospheric O2. Higher in the mesosphere, Lyman a-driven photodissociation of O2 provides a more...

Variability of organic and elemental carbon, water soluble organic carbon, and isotopes in Hong Kong

To determine the levels and variations of carbonaceous aerosol in Hong Kong, PM2.5 and PM10 samples were collected by high volume (Hi-vol) samplers at three monitoring stations (representing middle-scale roadside, urban-, and regional-scale environments) during winter (November 2000 to February 2001) and summer (June 2001 to August 2001) periods. The highest concentrations of organic carbon (OC...

11 Anthropogenic and biogenic controls on the surface-atmosphere exchange of CO2 are explored 12 for three different environments. Similarities are seen between suburban and woodland sites during 13 summer, when photosynthesis and respiration determine the diurnal pattern of the CO2 flux. In 14 winter, emissions from human activities dominate urban and suburban fluxes; building emissions 15 inc...

Levels of PM10 and its Chemical Composition in the Atmosphere of the City of Isfahan

Airborne particulate matter (PM10 ) was collected from the atmosphere of the city of Isfahan. The concentration of heavy metals and anions associated with airborne particulate matter were determined using atomic absorption spectrometric and ion chromatographic techniques. A comparison was made between the variation in the concentration of PM10 and that for heavy metals and...
